Our Leather

At Lunasa Leather, each hide is chosen independently for its weight, quality, temperament and durability. Hides are chosen specifically to perform best with each design, and to age beautifully. We source exclusively from tanneries that utilize waste from the meat industry and uphold the highest environmental standards, directly impacting the number of hides that enter landfills and the effect on the environment from the tanning process. Our goal is to create our designs using the best leather in the world from tanneries that revere their processes and people, lessening the environmental impact of the cattle industry and honoring the animals from which the leather is derived.

Circular economy, environmental responsibility, and the respect for human and animal rights are the foundation of our products. We therefore choose tanneries that meet or surpass environmental and workplace audit standards by third-party governing bodies committed to upholding the highest standards available in the leather industry. Tanneries passing these audits are recognized globally for the quality and impact of their finished products.

Our leather is currently sourced from Wickett & Craig in the United States.

Wickett & Craig

Wickett & Craig: Founded in 1867, Wickett & Craig is a world premiere vegetable tannery, and only one of two remaining in the USA. A labor-intensive method that requires skilled workers, veg-tanning is a natural, eco-friendly process that produces durable, exquisite leathers recognized for their depth of color and rich patina. Simply put our leathers not only endure, but get better with age. Originally from Toronto, Canada, today Wickett & Craig calls Curwensville, Pennsylvania home, making it one of the only specialty vegetable tanneries in the U.S.A.

Hardware

We use raw brass and nickel whenever possible, as these metals have proven their strength and durability in myriad applications, and provide elegance and a heritage finish for our products. At times, nickel-plated brass, steel or aluminum are choice due to durability and availability. All hardware is solid/die-cast. We strive to utilize the strongest and most elegant hardware that will endure daily use for years to come.

Leather Care

Our leathers are created to stand the test of time. Since our leathers are the highest quality vegetable tanned bridle leather available in the United States, it is incredibly soil and water resistant. We suggest purchasing a horse hair brush, and brushing your leather at least once a season. In general, our leathers do not require rigorous cleaning or conditioning. We recommend an annual clean/condition, using a high quality leather grease. If your leather becomes wet, simply pat to clean, and let dry. Rubbing the leather with your fingers spreads your natural oils back into any lines. Generally, a slightly damp soft cloth, or brushing are the best solutions to minor soiling. We believe in a "fewer, finer" approach to the acquisition of intentional, functional goods. We oil our boots seasonally, store our wool and cashmere with cedar, and we expect our leathers to outlive us. This is why we design and construct our bags, wallets, and accessories to go the distance.

EACH LUNASA LEATHER CARRY COMES WITH A LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY WHICH COVERS ALL DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP FOR THE LIFE OF THE PRODUCT. YOUR BAG WILL PATINA OVER TIME, A NATURAL AND PERSONAL PROCESS UNIQUE TO YOUR LIFESTYLE AND BAG.
